As a woodcarver, understanding the characteristics of the wood you’re working with is essential to create a great final design. Basswood is the ideal wood for many woodcarvers because of its unique characteristics of softness, availability and affordability.

Basswood is the wood from the Linden Tree, also known as the American Linden or Basswood Linden. It is a large deciduous tree, meaning basswood is hardwood although it has a softer texture, and is found in many parts of eastern Canada and the United States.

Basswood has a Janka Hardness Rating of 410 lbf, making it one of the softest woods on the scale. Basswood is very popular in the wood carving world, and for good reason! Read on to find out why!

Basswood is a soft hardwood (sounds odd, I know), which means it’s softer than hardwoods like oak or maple. This makes it easier to carve with hand tools or power tools. Unlike hardwoods like oak, basswood has a consistent texture and grain, which makes it ideal for detailed carvings. Basswood also has a light yellow-brown color that can be stained or painted to match an intended finish.
